Refrigerated containers (‘Reefers’) have the same robust steel frames as storage containers but have interior walls of stainless steel and aluminum and a layer of high efficiency insulating foam between the walls. Because of this they have a slightly smaller capacity (around 28cub m) than steel storage containers. Reefers have the refrigeration machinery is built into the end wall of the container and operate anywhere in the range of -25 and +20 deg C. A three phase power supply is required.

Reefers with non operating refrigeration units are sold as is for insulated storage. Alternatively non operating reefers can have the machinery replaced with new single phase machinery. These only operate as chillers.
