Shipping Containers Prices – What Determines Them?

Shipping containers prices will depend on whether you are buying new or used and what condition they are in. Regardless of the grade of the container that you choose to buy, you are likely to be pleasantly surprised at how affordable they are. Sea container units are built using high quality materials to be strong, water tight and weather proof and last for a very long time. However, when they have reached their destination shipping companies often find it cheaper to get knew ones from China than to send an empty unit on a long sea journey back to its original destination. For this reason there is a proliferation of empty containers found in dock yards all around the world. Shipping container brokers buy them up and sell them on to the public for use for a wide range of purposes. Shipping container prices tend to be very low as they are purchased wholesale at low prices. There are a range of shipping containers prices according to the size and condition of the container.

Shipping Containers Prices and Grades

Shipping containers prices are largely dependent on their size and grade. Standard sizes are:

  • 10 foot
  • 20 foot
  • 40 foot

It is best to choose a standard sizing to make transporting the container easier, however you may be able to find them anywhere between 10 foot and 48 foot. Shipping containers prices may also depend on whether you are buying a dry, refrigerated or insulated unit. There are a range of container grades available for purchase:

  • New: a container that has been built that year and used only once as a one way export unit
  • Grade A (premium): – the highest quality second hand
  • Grade B:  high quality second hand
  • Grade C:  fair quality

A Grade second hand containers are the more expensive of the used containers, but they are of the highest quality. They are totally water and weather proof; vermin proof; have few, if any dents; clean with no rust and are good for around 15 years without any repairs. B Grade shipping container prices are lower than grade A, but they are still very high quality. These containers are fully water tight, clean; they are vermin proof; door seals are intact; rust is minimal and has been primed and there are few dents. C Grade shipping containers prices are the lowest of them all. The containers are clean and mostly vermin proof; door seals are intact; there may be some surface rust, but the container will be good for around four years without repair.
