Ken Block’s Insane Recycled Shipping Container “Hoonigan” HQ

Chances are, if you have spent any amount of time on social media, you’ve seen one of Ken Block’s “Hoonigan” series of Gymkhana videos, featuring Ken performing insane feats in a wide variety of ultra high powered vehicles.
Ken is, of course, a professional rally driver with the Hoonigan Racing Division (also known as the Monster Energy Racing Team), as well as one of the founders of the well known DC Shoe Company.
He’s had an impressive record in all sorts of racing, from placing in major WRX events, starring in some of the most famous autosport videos on Youtube, featuring in video games and being the front man for top clothing brands.
His Hoonigan Racing Division competes in the World Rally Championship, Globalcross Rally Championship, FIA World Rallycross Championship and Rally America. Sponsored by Monster Energy, they currently drive a fully kitted out Ford Fiesta RS WRC rally car.
Constructing a HQ fit for a Hoonigan

To build the perfect headquarters for the Hoonigan team it took over two years from the original designing and planning stages until it was ready to move in. This amazing facility based in Ken Block’s hometown of Park City in Utah is one of the craziest container offices we’ve seen. Tonnes of shipping containers are decked out in the Hoonigan teams colours of bright green and blue, and you’ll see logos from all of the team sponsors plastered around the facility such as Monster Energy, Ford Racing, DC Shoe Company, Go Pro and of course Pirelli tyres.
Block chose to construct his new facility using modified shipping containers rather than traditional building materials such as, sheet rock for maximum flexibility. If they need to move, they can take their entire office with them. According to Ken Block:
“Using recycled shipping containers as the building blocks for the Hoonigan Racing Division headquarters is not only more environmentally friendly, but it gives us the flexibility to add more infrastructure and the ability to pack the entire facility onto trucks if we ever needed to relocate. It also provides a unique element to work with that is visually stunning and really adds to the creative environment of the space. I honestly could not be more stoked on the finished product.”

The huge 12,000 square foot facility hosts an office space which is home to Hoonigan’s 25 full time office staff and workers in marketing and administration, while the other side is the technical team who keep Hoonigan’s vehicles in top notch condition in the workshop. All in all 17 second hand shipping containers were used to construct this modular workplace, along with other recycled or sustainable materials. The flooring is made from fast growing bamboo, while the tiling is made from recycled skateboard decks!
Ken’s goal was to create a modern workspace that completely changed what was considered to be industry standard for something in motorsport. Instead of a dingy garage, he has an office fit for a world leader in his industry – one that rivals that of many top ad agencies or others in the creative industry.
“I need a place where our whole team – from the marketing staff to the technicians – can be inspired and enjoy working in everyday. So aside from the standard office needs, we made sure to build in some fun; from a ping pong table to a full entertainment area with its own bar. But, I also wanted the other side of the headquarters – the workshop – to have the feel and functionality of a World Rally Championship-level facility like M-Sport or Prodrive. I think we achieved all my goals with this facility!”

Looking to relax while taking a lunch break? There’s even a chill out area with AstroTurf and couches to kick back and get away from it all for a few minutes. Design and the cool factor isn’t everything though – the Hoonigan HQ is also all about performance.
Jam packed full of toolboxes from Snap On tools, you’ll never run out of screw drivers or socket sets when you need them. And of course, what better place to store all those spare bumpers, tyres and body panels when you don’t need them than a massive 40 foot shipping container?
