Visible Police and Army Presence in a Modified Shipping Container

The ongoing conflict in Syria and Iraq is a concept known as asymmetric warfare – there are multiple frontlines in different enclaves and the enemy is as likely to come from behind as it is from directly in front of you. Those controlling a certain area need to have an obvious presence wherever they may be, and this is where the concept of the shipping container ‘border guard in a box’ and ‘police presence in a box’ comes in.
Highly mobile shipping containers containing all a police or army unit need to establish their presence visibly can be moved quickly into a newly won position.
Police presence and border guard in a box
Two hundred shipping containers, 100 each for the Iraqi security forces’ police and army have been fully fitted out by the US and western governments at cost of US$50 million.
According to a 2017 Business Insider article, “The so-called program calls for 100 shipping containers with laptops, furniture, and Land Cruiser vehicles will be set up as makeshift, mobile police stations in Mosul and across five liberated provinces.”
Canadian Brigadier General D.J. Anderson, who is in charge of the project explained, “The contents can be unpacked and set up quickly to allow the police to immediately begin serving their citizens.”
Mobility, warfare, shipping containers
Many years ago when the West first engaged with Saddam Hussein in Iraq, they rapidly got bogged down in asymmetric warfare. Guerilla warfare, as it has previously been known, has been proven to be the best way to tackle an invading army. The United States and Australia lost the war in Vietnam due to the communists effecting asymmetric warfare against them – we never knew from which direction attacks would come, and were not fighting in a straight line as they might have in Russia or China.
Asymmetric warfare requires high levels of mobility to quickly respond to the changing strategic situation on the ground. Shipping containers slot into this perfectly! How? Without using expensive or heavy equipment, and with a certain level of protection, the containers can move equipment around the theatre of war quickly and effectively.
The shipping containers don’t go empty either. As with the police presence in box and border guard in a box, they can be fitted out and equipped in advance of entering the area. In this case they contain all the unit needs to provide high visibility protection to the public in a newly conquered area. Once more the shipping containers can be fitted out, sometimes thousands of miles away, and moved by container ship and standard logistics equipment to the theatre of war.
