  3. 20ft Container – How Do You Make One?

Since the 20ft container was introduced more than 50 years ago, it has totally changed international trade. The strong and secure metal 20ft container made it possible for large quantities of goods to be transported internationally.

Materials Used in Construction of a 20ft Container

A shipping container is typically made from:

  • 14 gauge steel
  • Plymetal
  • Aluminium
  • Plywood
  • Fibreglass.

The containers are built to be extremely strong in order to be able to successfully transport and protect the items they are carrying. They are fabricated with corrugated steel walls welded together and steel casings reinforcing each of the eight corners.

20ft containerThe roof may also be made from corrugated steel or flat sheet steel. Doors on a container are made from plymetal and they are fitted with strong weatherproof seals and locking hardware to secure the goods inside. Flooring on a container is made from plywood or planking that is secured across the steel base.

Some containers are made with sheet aluminium and reinforced with steel. The aluminium is riveted to internal poles and steel is added to the side rails and end frames.

A shipping container has to be able to ship anything that needs to be transported internationally and they are built accordingly with maximum space inside provided. Since they are open to the elements on their sea journey, they also need to be watertight, able to withstand rain, sea water, wind and many other extreme weather conditions. A 20ft container is constructed to take a potential pounding while in transit, this strength and weather proof capability is why they are now being used for many reasons – not just in shipping goods.

These days used shipping containers are being put to use as storage units, warehouses, offices, retail space and even used in home construction. They are favoured for their affordable price and the strength, durability and security that they offer the user.
